View Full Version : BB[Pro] with EOS 1D - useful tip

I just received an as-new EOS 1D, and was initially very disappointed with the results when viewing images I had taken with BB (& BBPro): there were really visible jagged edges on most images when I was doing a slideshow.

This was a significant problem for me, cos I've used both EOS D30 and 10D with BB, no problem - I get a 1-series, and then the jaggies appear! Not good for showing clients whose portrait images I've just taken...

Fortunately, I found the solution, and thought it was worth passing on to the BB[Pro] community.

As with my 10D, on my 1D, I selected RAW + small/fine JPEG for storing images that are taken with the camera.

What I didn't realise is that the small/fine JPEG produced by the 1D (1232 x 824) is a different size from that produced by the 10D (1536 x 1024), and that it would have an effect on how the image is displayed in the slideshow (even when high quality mode is selected - this just sharpened the jagged edges).

I'm guessing that the 1232x824 image is too close to what's available on a 1024x768 screen, and changing the image such a small amount introduces the jaggies - so I changed the setting on the 1D to large/coarse (2464 x 1648).

Problem solved - perfectly sharp images when viewing in BBPro slideshow!

And although the JPEG image is the same dimensions as the original RAW file, its size is roughly 300K (and the small/fine JPEG was roughly 200K), so there's minimal impact on disk space.

I also found that when I set the JPEG to large/fine, the size jumps to somewhere around 1MB, so I'll be looking at the difference in quality between large/coarse and large/fine to see which is best.

Well, after all that, I hope the above is both correct, and of use to someone else!

cheers,

Matt
