I've been using DSLR remote pro for a couple of years on XP without any issues.

A few weeks ago we installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit RTM(Release to Mfg, the same version that will be available tomorrow 10-22-09, obtained through our Technet subscription)

The Camera is a Digital Rebel XT(350D).

If I set the connection type to Print/PTP W7 will connect fine and I can transfer pictures, delete files etc. This type of connection does not allow for remote control of the camera. If I start DSLR Remote Pro, it will connect but there is a message something like "Make sure the LCD screen is off" when I try to release the shutter.

If I change the connection type to "Pc Connection", which allows for remote camera control, W7 cannot find the proper driver. The device shows up with the yellow exclamation in the device manager and "BUSY" flashes on the camera. DSLR Remote pro cannot connect to the camera.

At that point, one would assume that all you'd need to do is install the driver and all would be well. The problem is, Canon does not make a 64 bit driver for this camera. I tried the 32bit driver but it would not install.

The version of DSLR Remote pro I tried was 1.7.

At this point, I'm pursuing Windows Virtual PC but it has some limitations like 16 bit colors(or it did a few months ago anyway)

If I can get a virtual XP going properly(it is still downloading..500megs or so) that will work. It would be nice to get it working natively however.

I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks.

I don't think you can control a Rebel XT/350D using any 64-bit OS. Canon have drivers for 32-bit Vista which work on 32-bit versions of Window 7 but not 64-bit. Cameras from the Rebel XTi/400D onwards don't require separate drivers to be installed and will work on 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows 7.

Thanks.

That's basically what I figured.

I was able to install windows XP mode virtual PC, attach the camera through the USB menu, and the DSLR remote pro works normally in the XP environment.

I had to download the XP driver from Canon, and it took a restart of the virtual machine before the driver would install but other than that, it passed through USB without trouble.

Just a note of clarification, using connection type PTP/Print, Windows 7 loads and recognizes the camera just fine. There is no need for a driver. DSLRRP needs the PC connection type for remote control. I find it hard to believe that this doesn't affect more cameras using the 64 bit version of Windows 7(Vista). I just checked and there are no drivers from Canon for the XTi, the XS, the XSi, the 5d, etc. I guess it's included for some cameras. I guess it's time for a new body.

Also, just in case others are reading this later, windows XP Mode only works on Windows 7 Ultimate and Professional. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

As far as i know, you can not control any Canon cameras on a 64 bit machine. Everything installs on mine, the shutter release button does not work. Canon tells you no 64 bit, but only when I read it later.

I haven't had much luck with Vista 64-bit, but some customers have managed to get it to work with recent cameras.
Windows 7 64-bit is a different story: DSLR Remote Pro works fine with recent cameras as does PSRemote and NKRemote. Windows 7 32-bit also works fine.

Do you know if anyone has been able to mount (connect) a Canon 5D to dslr-Remote Pro using vista 64? I also use the 40D I have better results with it in Vista 64, but not 100%, with XR Pro I get about 85% happiness. If I read the post correctly, Win7 32 or 64 will allow me to use my 5D and have complete control, is that correct.

Unfortunately you can't control older models like the original Canon EOS 5D from a 64-bit version of Windows. These cameras required separate drivers to be installed and Canon have only ever released drivers for 32-bit versions of Windows.

Newer models such as the Canon EOS 5D Mark II will work with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7. I'm not sure whether this is because Canon have done something clever with the drivers in recent cameras so that they work with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows or whether Microsoft have done something clever in Windows 7 64-bit to allow it to work with 32-bit drivers, but it does work.

Please see the DSLR Remote Pro features page for a list of supported cameras and operating systems:

I was trying to use it with my 40d on Windows Vista 64 bit and then windows 7 beta.

I'll give my 5d MK II a try now that I have the released windows 7 64 bit installed on one of my PC's.

I've tested the 40D on 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows 7 and it works fine. It also works on Windows 7 RC 1. There shouldn't be any problems using a 5D Mark II either.
