Custom Layout

I was playing around and trying to do a custom layout thats a 4x6 in size (2400 pixels by 3600 pixels) I believe. When I asked the program to move the pics 10 pixels to the left there were no pixels on the strip. If I unchecked custom layout they were in the middle. I tried reading the how to but did not seem to get it. Could someone try to break the procedure down for me. Lets start with a simple example first. 4 rows, 1 column a couple of mm from the left.
