I have got a mini photo booth rig I use. I have limited space for a printer and I have been using a canon selphy 780 as its small and relativly low cost to run for what it is.

But it is what it is and at 45 seconds to print and each colour pass on the print the half finsihed picture pops its head out the front teasing the user, its needing updating.

Has anyone got any tips for a very small self contained 6x4 photo printer. Size wise I guess its going to be a personal rather than commecial unit. Maybe a rear loader that with prints that exit at the front.

Something like the polaroid POGO but with print costs closer to 22p a picture.

I don't know of a small compact size printer, other than the canon's.

I have 3 booths. One uses the Sony UPCX1 printer, one the DNP DSRX1, and the other one uses the Canon Selphy 780 printer. I just added a 2nd 780, pooled to the 3rd booth. This way, while one print is finishing printing, the next one has started. I may be upgrading to the DNP DS40 around the first of the year.
(All of the booths have a Selphy printer for back-up)

I think if you want something that is going to print faster, with quality, you will need to look at the higher end printers. Depending on how many rentals you have, it may be worth the investment.

When I added the 3rd booth, I looked at cost per print and number of rentals projected for the 2nd booth and ended up purchasing the DNP printer. Long term, more economical and convenient. (But heavy)

One of the things I do with the paper for the Selphy printer, is perforate it down the middle prior to the event. You can purchase a decent trimmer and perforation blade from a Creative Memories Consultant.
