I recently purchased DSLR Remote Pro to control a Canon EOS-10D. Am I required to run DSLR Remote in the background when I run my custom written application?

Yes, you need to run DSLR Remote Pro even if you are using the interface library to from another app. The interface library connects to DSLR Remote Pro which talks to the camera.
